Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Grand Hotel Bastiani, I wasn’t expecting much from a place sitting right on Piazza Gioberti. I mean, you know how central locations can be… sometimes they’re just tourist traps with inflated prices. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible.
The thing about staying here is that you’re literally in the heart of Grosseto, which sounds obvious but trust me, it matters more than you’d think. You can walk to the medieval walls in about three minutes (I timed it), and honestly, there’s something pretty magical about having your morning coffee while looking out at a proper Italian piazza. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re comfortable without being fancy. Clean lines, decent bathrooms, and – this is key – actually quiet despite being so central. I was worried about noise, especially during the evening passeggiata when locals come out for their walks, but the windows do their job. The beds are firm in that European way that takes a night to get used to, but then you sleep like a baby.
What really got me about this place, though, is how the staff just… gets it. They’re not overly fussy or trying too hard to impress, but they know their city. The guy at reception – I think his name was Marco – gave me these incredibly specific directions to this little osteria that wasn’t even in my guidebook. And when I mentioned I was thinking about day trips, he didn’t just hand me a brochure. He actually sat down and sketched out a rough map showing me which buses to take to get to the coast, which beaches have parking (spoiler: not many), and which hill towns are worth the drive versus the ones that are just… fine. You know what I mean – that local knowledge you can’t Google.
The breakfast situation is solid too, not spectacular, but properly Italian. Fresh pastries, good coffee, and they don’t rush you out if you want to linger over your cappuccino. I actually ended up chatting with other guests most mornings – there’s this communal table that somehow doesn’t feel forced or awkward.
Here’s the thing about Grosseto that I didn’t really appreciate until staying here: it’s not Florence or Rome, and that’s exactly why it works. You’re close enough to pop over to Siena for the day (about an hour by bus), but you come back to a place that feels genuinely Italian rather than like a movie set. The piazza gets busy during market days – Thursdays and Saturdays, if you’re planning – but it’s locals-busy, not tour-group-busy. And if you want to escape to the Maremma coast, you’re maybe twenty minutes from some seriously underrated beaches.
Would I stay here again? Absolutely. It’s not going to wow you with luxury amenities or blow your mind with design, but it does something better – it gives you a real base in a real Italian town, with people who actually care about making your stay work. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Superb – Andrea from United Kingdom – 10 July 2025 (9/10)
Everything!!! 15 to 20mins walk from the railway station or the local bus service can do drop off/ pick up just outside the hotel. We chose the pleasant walk.
The hotel was quite central for bars, food, shopping & sightseeing.
Comfortable huge bed, clean towels daily, English TV channel (we like to listen to the world news). Simple but adequate buffet breakfast.
Staff were very friendly & helpful.
Lovely spacious accommodation.
A/C in the room.
What could be improved: Noisy neighbours!Very good – Arian from Netherlands – 5 July 2025 (8/10)
Nice hotel, nice location, friendly staff
What could be improved: The breakfast could have been a bit betterPerfect place to call home while exploring Grosseto. – Lisa from United States – 25 June 2025 (10/10)
Excellent location, traditional hotel that tells of an impressive past (with great artwork throughout) very comfortable, and the staff was exceptionally warm and helpful.
What could be improved: Some things could use updating, but also I appreciate the classic vibe of the place — like the intercom system by the beds!Exceptional – Marta from Finland – 24 June 2025 (10/10)
Everything was perfetto 😍
Worth the stop on Grosetto – Chris from Australia – 11 June 2025 (9/10)
The suite was very comfortable. No view.
The sitting areas on the hotel are lovely. So is the breakfast.
What could be improved: Not having a view but as you spend so little time in your room it does not matter.Good quality hotel to venture into historic town. – Richard from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (9/10)
Great location on edge of walled old town. Classically presented period hotel.
What could be improved: Only that there were no tea&coffee facilities in the room which appears to be provided only in some Italian hotels and apartments.
Ideally, there would also be private parking …. however public, open parking with CCTV is nearby.Exceptional – Keith from United States – 29 May 2025 (10/10)
Amazing place to stay.. clean, great location, great breakfast! Friendly staff
What could be improved: NothingCharming hotel in historical centre of Grosseto – Sandris from Latvia – 26 May 2025 (10/10)
Charming hotel in the heart of Grosseto. Best location. Welcoming and professional staff. Clean rooms, a little bit outdated but yet charming. Tastefully decorated public areas. Breakfast is basic, but still lovely.
Grosseto doesn’t have a big choice of hotels. And Hotel Bastiani probably is the best!Exceptional – Patti from United States – 24 April 2025 (10/10)
The staff was super helpful. My city map app had me traveling for hours to get to the Tarot Garden however they found a much faster way. The room was comfy, the breakfast was fabulous.
What could be improved: Personal preference, I dont care for carpets in hotels. As hard as they worked, still doesn't get clean do to high traffic.Superb – Janice from Australia – 17 April 2025 (9/10)
Comfortable hotel. Spacious room.
What could be improved: Limited breakfast options.
