FH55 Grand Hotel Mediterraneo
So I’ve stayed at the FH55 Grand Hotel Mediterraneo a few times now, and honestly, it’s become my go-to spot when I need to be in Florence but want to avoid the tourist circus around the Duomo. The thing is, it sits right on Lungarno del Tempio – which means you’re literally steps from the Arno River, but on the Oltrarno side where things feel more, I don’t know, authentic? You wake up and instead of hearing tour groups shuffling past at 7 AM, you get locals heading to work and maybe some joggers along the riverbank.
The hotel itself has this sort of understated elegance that I really appreciate. It’s not trying to be some over-the-top luxury palace, but everything feels solid and well-maintained. The lobby has these gorgeous marble floors that echo just enough to give it character without being echoey, if that makes sense. What I love is how the staff actually remembers you after a night or two – there’s this one concierge, Marco, who somehow knows every tiny restaurant in Santo Spirito and will steer you away from the tourist traps without you even asking. The rooms are spacious by Florence standards (which, let’s be real, isn’t saying much), but they’ve got this warm, contemporary feel with decent air conditioning – crucial during those brutal July weeks when the city turns into an oven.
Location-wise, you’re about a 10-minute walk to Ponte Vecchio, but here’s the thing most people don’t realize: you’re actually closer to some of the best stuff in Florence than if you stayed in the center. The Pitti Palace is practically next door, and you can wander through the Boboli Gardens in the morning before the crowds hit. Plus, crossing the river to get to the main sights gives you these incredible views that hotel guests staying in the centro storico completely miss. I mean, every morning becomes this little photo opportunity without even trying. The neighborhood has this lovely residential feel in the evenings – you’ll see families out for passeggiata and locals having aperitivo at the little bars along Via Maggio. Parking is actually manageable here too, which is basically a miracle in Florence. They’ve got a garage, and while it’s not cheap, at least you’re not circling the block for an hour like you would near Santa Maria Novella.
The breakfast is better than it needs to be – proper Italian coffee, obviously, but also fresh pastries from a local bakery rather than those sad hotel croissants you get at chain places. You know what really sold me on this place though? The way the evening light hits the Arno from their river-facing rooms. It’s that golden hour magic that makes you understand why people have been painting this city for centuries. Sure, it’s not the fanciest hotel in Florence, but it gets all the important stuff right while letting you feel like you’re actually staying in a neighborhood rather than a tourist bubble.
