Hotel Description

You know what hits you first when you pull up to Borgo in San Angelo? The fact that you’re actually staying inside Cortona’s medieval walls – and I mean literally inside, not just “close to the historic center” like half the places claim. The entrance on via C:S:S.Angelo is tucked away in this narrow street that most tourists walk right past, which honestly makes it feel like you’ve discovered something special.

The whole place has this authentic Tuscan vibe that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. I mean, you’re in a restored borgo (that’s basically a small village compound), so the stone walls and arched doorways are the real deal, not some modern interpretation. The rooms vary quite a bit – some have these incredible valley views stretching toward Lake Trasimeno, while others look into the internal courtyard. Either way, you’re waking up to church bells from San Francesco just down the hill, which sounds romantic until you realize they start at 6 AM. Actually, you get used to it pretty quickly, and it becomes part of the whole experience.

What I really appreciate is how they’ve managed to blend historical character with modern comfort. The WiFi actually works (not always a given in these old stone buildings), and the bathrooms are properly updated without looking out of place. Parking can be a bit tricky since you’re right in the historic center – there’s limited space, so definitely mention if you’re bringing a car when you book. The staff genuinely knows the area well, too. They’ll point you toward the morning market in Piazza della Repubblica or suggest hiking trails that aren’t in the guidebooks. One evening, the guy at reception told me about this tiny enoteca around the corner where locals go for aperitivo – the kind of place you’d never find on your own. That 9.2 rating makes total sense when you experience little touches like that. Sure, it’s not cheap, but you’re paying for location and authenticity in one of Tuscany’s most perfectly preserved hill towns. If you’re the type who wants to step out your door and be immediately immersed in medieval streets, morning coffee at the local bar, and sunset views over the Val di Chiana, this is exactly what you’re looking for.

Reviews

  • A great place to stay to recharge before continuing on with our Italian tour – Kirsten from New Zealand – 31 August 2024 (9/10)

Close to Cortona and another town nearby for food shopping. Very easy property to locate. The pool was well used as were the sun loungers. Electronic gate to enter the property ensured a safe place to stay at. The staff were friendly and welcoming and assisted with issues with washing machine instructions. The room we booked had a seperate lounge and full kitchen with upstairs bedroom with large comfortable bed. The property was well maintained also.

What could be improved: The shower was a very tight space for us.

  • Relaxing – Alves from Portugal – 30 July 2024 (10/10)

The hosts were very nice! We also got the chance to meet their puppies and they were adorable.
    Absolutely recommend!

What could be improved: Nothing bad.

  • Beautiful family holiday home – Brenda from Switzerland – 24 July 2024 (10/10)

Very spacious holiday home infused with rustic tuscan charm. Grounds are sublime. Fabulous pool. Very easy access and parking.
Wonderful hosts, providing advice and service whilst also leaving space and privacy.

What could be improved: Loved everything except the mosquitoes, bring repellent lotion.

  • Wonderful place to place. Very friendly hosts. Swimming pool great after cycling in heat. Very handy shop down the road. – Jonathan from United Kingdom – 30 June 2024 (10/10)

    Beautiful area.

  • Beautiful property in the valley – Thea from United Kingdom – 29 June 2024 (9/10)

The owners were lovely and very welcoming offering to get anything we needed. The pool was large and lots of places to sunbathe or sit in the shade

What could be improved: It would have been nice to have a curtain/ blind for the window to block out the light. It is very high up so no issue with privacy, just let's the light in on the morning.

  • A must visit! – Ella from New Zealand – 20 May 2024 (10/10)

An amazing place, gorgeous grounds, clean and comfy places! Such a lovely family who welcomed us in! There was a large group of us so we hired multiple apartments and it worked well. Highly recommend!!

  • Lovely, lovely experience – Wimer from United States – 29 July 2024 (9/10)

    Hostess was very responsive

What could be improved: AC was very weak

  • Good – Merete from Denmark – 4 August 2024 (7/10)

    Cosy and good space

What could be improved: Aircondition in one of the rooms didn’t work, but the host made arrangement to have it fixed, but we didn’t see it work before we left.

  • We had a good stay and other than being dark overall it was nice place. – Thomas from United States – 4 October 2024 (7/10)

    Quiet and clean

What could be improved: Way too many steps and very dark

  • Rustic and charming place which would benefit from a little more TLC – Lisa from United Kingdom – 28 August 2024 (6/10)

Location (2 miles from centre of Cortona). Gated private property. Clean large pool, good and plenty of sunbeds. Nice hosts

What could be improved: Unfortunately there was a bad smell of damp coming from the bathroom (mouldy plaster, needs extractor fan). Door has to be kept shut otherwise smell permeates everything. Don’t want to moan but would suggest adding a few things like: hangers in wardrobe, wine glasses, kettle, kitchen knife and a larger saucepan. Also a curtain is needed in the bedroom
