So I stumbled across B&B Piccolo Hotel tucked away on this tiny side street – Vicolo Petrella – that honestly, I would’ve walked right past if I hadn’t been looking for it. That’s actually part of its charm, you know? It’s like finding this little secret in Cortona that most tourists never discover because they’re all busy hunting down the main piazza.

The thing about this place is that it gets the whole “small hotel” thing right without feeling cramped or, well, cheap. I mean, sure, it’s called Piccolo for a reason, but the owners – and you can tell there are actual owners here, not some corporate chain – they’ve managed to make every inch count. The rooms have this understated elegance that feels authentically Italian, not like someone’s idea of what Italian should look like. You’ll notice the attention to detail in weird places, like the way the bathroom fixtures actually work properly (trust me, this isn’t always a given in older Italian buildings) and how the Wi-Fi doesn’t mysteriously die every time more than two people try to use it.

What really sold me on the place was the location – I keep coming back to this because it matters so much in Cortona. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Piazza della Repubblica, but you’re far enough down this quiet vicolo that you don’t get the crowds or the noise from the restaurants that stay open late. Actually, speaking of restaurants, the family running this place gives the best local recommendations I’ve ever gotten. They sent me to this tiny trattoria that doesn’t even have a proper sign, just a handwritten menu posted outside, and it was honestly the best meal I had in Tuscany. The morning routine here is pretty perfect too – they do this continental breakfast that’s not trying to be fancy, just really good coffee and pastries that taste like they actually came from a local bakery, not some industrial supplier.

Parking can be a bit of an adventure (welcome to medieval Italian hilltop towns), but they’ll sort you out with directions to the closest spot where you won’t get a ticket – which, let me tell you, is worth its weight in gold. The whole check-in process feels more like you’re staying with distant relatives than at a hotel, in the best possible way. They remember your name, ask about your day, and genuinely seem to care whether you’re enjoying Cortona. It’s got that 8.9 rating for a reason – it’s not perfect, but it’s the kind of place where the small imperfections somehow add to the character rather than detract from it. If you’re looking for a pool or a gym or room service, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to feel like you’re actually experiencing Italy rather than just visiting it, B&B Piccolo Hotel gets it right.

  What could be improved: The room we had, and not all the rooms are like this, toilet down some steep stairs and bathroom other side. No hand rail to go down to toilet. I did mention this so hopefully it will be fixed.
  In saying this, room 215 is possibly the only one with this configuration
