You know what really surprised me about Amiata Suite? It’s tucked away on Via Trieste in this medieval hill town called Abbadia San Salvatore that honestly feels like stepping back in time – but in the best possible way. I mean, you’re literally staying in a place where the ancient abbey bells still ring out over cobblestone streets, and the whole vibe is just… peaceful. Really peaceful.

The suite itself is exactly what you’d hope for in a renovated Italian townhouse – high ceilings, those gorgeous original stone details, but with everything updated so you’re not fighting with temperamental plumbing or struggling with ancient heating systems. The owner clearly gets that travelers want authentic character without the headaches that usually come with staying in centuries-old buildings. What I loved most was how they managed to keep that distinctly Italian feel (the tile work is stunning) while making sure everything actually works properly. The bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been sleeping on a medieval torture device, which honestly can be hit or miss in these historic places.

But here’s the thing that really sets this spot apart – the location is absolutely perfect if you’re looking to explore Monte Amiata without dealing with crowds. Abbadia San Salvatore sits right at the base of the mountain, so you can literally walk out your door and be on hiking trails within minutes. During truffle season (October through December, if you’re planning), the whole area comes alive with hunters and their dogs, and you’ll catch these incredible earthy scents drifting through town. The thermal baths at Bagni San Filippo are maybe a 20-minute drive away, and trust me, after a day of wandering around medieval streets, soaking in those natural hot springs feels like pure magic. Plus, parking is actually manageable here – there’s street parking right outside, and you won’t be circling for hours like you would in, say, Siena or Florence. The only minor thing I’d mention is that some rooms face the street, and while Via Trieste isn’t exactly a highway, you do get the occasional delivery truck rumbling by in the early morning. But honestly, after a day of exploring, I slept right through it.
