Agriturismo Villetta Di Monterufoli is exactly that – tucked away on Via Provinciale Quattro Comuni just outside Monteverdi Marittimo, where the rolling Tuscan hills start getting serious about their beauty. I mean, this isn’t some roadside tourist trap; it’s the real deal, an actual working farm that happens to do hospitality better than most dedicated hotels.

The first thing that hits you isn’t visual – it’s the quiet. Like, proper countryside quiet where you can actually hear birds and maybe a distant tractor, not the fake “peaceful” you get at resort chains. The stone buildings have that weathered look that only comes from decades of Tuscan sun and rain, and honestly, the whole setup feels like stumbling into someone’s family compound (which, let’s be honest, is sort of what it is). The rooms are rustic but thoughtfully done – thick walls that keep things cool even in August, wooden beams that creak just enough to remind you where you are, and windows that frame views you’ll spend way too much time staring at. Don’t expect ultra-modern amenities, but everything works perfectly fine, and the Wi-Fi is surprisingly solid for being this far from civilization.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to stay authentic without being stuffy about it. The family running it actually knows the land – they’ll tell you which trails lead to the best viewpoints (there’s one about twenty minutes up the hill that looks straight across to Volterra on clear days), and they’re not shy about sharing their own olive oil and wine, which is dangerous because both are excellent. The restaurant situation is interesting too – they don’t do formal dining, but Maria (I think that’s her name) will cook if you ask nicely, and her pici pasta with wild boar ragu is worth the trip alone. Parking is never an issue, which might sound trivial until you’ve circled Florence for an hour looking for a spot. The pool area gets busy around 4 PM when families with kids show up, but mornings are perfect for solo swimming with just the sound of cicadas for company. My only real complaint? The checkout process is a bit casual – like, sometimes there’s just a note to leave your key on the desk – which is charming but can be stressful if you’re catching a train.

Look, this isn’t for everyone. If you need room service and a concierge, stay in town. But if you want to actually experience rural Tuscany without the tourist circus, and you don’t mind driving twenty minutes to reach proper restaurants (though why would you when you’re surrounded by this scenery?), Villetta Di Monterufoli delivers something increasingly rare: the feeling that you’ve discovered a place, rather than just booked one. That 9.2 rating isn’t inflated – it’s what happens when a place knows exactly what it is and does it really, really well.

  Stunning hotel and surroundings, the pool area was very calm and lovely. Rooms were newly renovated and charming. Food and wine were very good and local. Bring mosquito spray though.

And Gabriele (Chef) is really MasterChef and magician. All diners were extraordinary experience. And special thanks for preparing for me tuna with mushrooms😊. The best meal which I have ever eaten.

  Gabriele the chef was an absolute delight, plus the female chef we missed her name unfortunately. We got married while we stayed at Monterufoli and the staff made our stay so amazing and accomodating. We can’t wait to be back
