Agriturismo Poggio de Papi
Serravalle Pistoiese, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Agriturismo Poggio de Papi? The silence. I mean, coming from Florence (about an hour’s drive through some seriously winding mountain roads), the contrast was almost jarring. This place sits up in Cantagrillo – honestly, you might miss the turnoff if you’re not paying attention – and it’s one of those spots where you immediately understand why Tuscans are so protective of their countryside.
The agriturismo itself feels like stepping into someone’s family home, which I guess it sort of is. The Papi family has been working this land for generations, and they’ve converted part of their property into guest accommodations without losing that authentic farmhouse vibe. The rooms are in this beautifully restored stone building with thick walls that keep everything cool even in August (trust me on this – I was there during a heat wave). What I loved was how they’ve modernized things thoughtfully – the bathrooms are sleek and contemporary, but you’re still waking up to roosters and the smell of fresh bread drifting up from the kitchen downstairs.
The location is actually pretty strategic if you want to explore this part of Tuscany without dealing with tourist crowds. Pistoia is maybe twenty minutes down the mountain, and it’s criminally underrated – the medieval center there is stunning and you can actually walk around without fighting through tour groups. From Poggio de Papi, you’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to Lucca or even Pisa, but honestly, I found myself wanting to just stay put more often than not. The family serves dinner most nights (you have to book ahead), and it’s the kind of meal where you start at seven and suddenly realize it’s past eleven and you’re on your third glass of their house wine, talking with other guests like you’ve known them for years.
The only thing to keep in mind is that this isn’t a resort experience – there’s no pool, no spa, no room service. But that’s exactly the point. What you get instead is Maria (the matriarch) teaching you how to make proper pici pasta if you’re interested, or Giuseppe showing you around the olive groves and explaining why their oil tastes so different from the stuff you buy at home. The hiking right from the property is incredible too – there are trails that wind through chestnut forests and eventually connect to the old pilgrim routes if you’re feeling ambitious.
Parking is easy (just pull up to the main house), and the family speaks enough English to help with anything you need, though they really appreciate when guests try a bit of Italian. The WiFi works fine, but honestly, you might find yourself caring less about staying connected than you expected. I kept my phone in my room most of the time and just… existed. It’s that kind of place.
If you’re looking for a genuine slice of Tuscan life – not the postcard version, but the real thing with working farms and families who’ve been here forever – this is it. Just don’t expect it to be a secret much longer. At these prices and with word getting out, I have a feeling Poggio de Papi won’t stay this peaceful forever.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Couldn’t fault this beautiful accomodation.
What could be improved: Truly, it couldn’t have been better
What could be improved: Not yet fully acquainted with hikers
What could be improved: A little more remote than expected. For some reason, the owner didn’t have the hot tub on which we were looking forward to. He said he turns it on “next week””.
Very friendly and accommodating owners Giovanni & Marzia who made us feel so welcome.
Excellent breakfast spread and an amazing evening meal every night of our stay, much of which using produce from the farm itself and if not, very often the local region.
You need a car and a bit of confidence to handle the small mountain roads but you're only minutes away from the city of Pistoia and a good base to visit Florence, Lucca, Vinci and so many more places.
What could be improved: Leaving. We could have stayed longer 😭
Excellent breakfast and dinner.
Quite place to enjoy with Frieds.
